Shuhada Organization is dedicated to the welfare and progress of Afghans, particularly women and girls. Shuhada Organization operates out of central and northern Afghanistan, in the areas of health, education, income generation, construction, training, and relief distribution. Founded by Dr. Sima Samar in 1989, Shuhada Organization is Afghanistan’s oldest NGO, and is the largest Afghan NGO to be led by women.
Under the Taliban’s rule, women were deprived of their most basic human rights. The Taliban prohibited women’s education, employment, mobility, and severely limited their access to health care. Despite the fact that the Taliban are out of power, opposition to women’s rights remains strong.
Despite these many challenges, Shuhada Organization has courageously provided education, healthcare, and income generation opportunities for women in Afghanistan. Over the past twenty years, Shuhada Organization has established 4 hospitals, 12 clinics, 60 schools, 2 women’s shelters, a multi-service women’s centre, a science institute, and several orphanages. Over 60,000 children have studied at schools established by Shuhada, and Shuhada’s clinics and hospitals now serve approximately 750 patients a day. Through its many initiatives, Shuhada continues to fight for the rights Afghan women and girls ---working for a better tomorrow. |
